Desktop Chrome · Version 0.1.13

Import captions,
with less effort.

From video to script. Spend less time copying files and more time improving your video.

Automatic caption import is available only in desktop Chrome.
On mobile, you can run an audit by entering the script manually or loading a caption file (.srt, .vtt, .txt).

Click Collect captions to pause and mute the video while collecting captions only.

YouTube may briefly play when the link first opens. Collection pauses and mutes playback.

You can install it directly from the installation file. Chrome Web Store availability will follow its review process.

App button → Read public captions → Screen collection if needed → Auto-fill in app

01

Enter the video URL in the app

Enter the video URL in VIDEOudit, check consent for caption import, then select automatic import.

02

Read and collect public captions

The extension first reads the selected video’s public caption data directly. If that fails, it opens More → Show transcript to collect from the screen. Collection continues when the popup closes.

03

Apply the script in the original app

When finished, captions automatically fill the empty script in the original app. Review the text and time range. If content already exists, use Apply to replace it.

Progress and automatic input

The progress card shows the current step, collected captions, elapsed time and maximum wait remaining. This is a wait limit, not an estimated completion time.

When captions arrive, the app fills the empty script and moves to it. Review the text before running an audit. Existing drafts are never overwritten without confirmation.

The extension’s Open app button brings you to the receiving Chrome app tab. Other browsers do not receive the captions automatically.

Enable automatic import once

Open VIDEOudit from the Chrome toolbar and enable automatic import. Accept Chrome’s YouTube site-access request to start future collections from the app button.

Start in the app to receive captions in the same app tab.

After preparing the video, the extension tries to open its popup. Chrome 127 or later supports this, but visibility is not guaranteed and clicking elsewhere closes it. Collection continues independently, with status in the app.

Automatic collection starts only for a video you request in the app. Opening another YouTube page does not trigger collection.

Already installed? Update to 0.1.13
  1. Download the latest ZIP file above and extract it.
  2. Open the folder you selected during installation. Copy all files from the newly extracted folder into that original folder, replacing files with the same names.
  3. In the Chrome address bar, enterchrome://extensionsthen click the reload icon (↻) on the VIDEOudit Caption Companion card.
  4. Reload VIDEOudit and YouTube too. Check that installed version 0.1.13 appears at the top of the extension popup.

If you cannot find the original installation folder, remove the old extension and follow the first-time installation steps using the new folder.

Check the collection scope.

Shorts are collected after switching to the regular video view. Text embedded in the video cannot be imported if public captions are unavailable.

The extension reads sentences and timestamps from the selected video’s public caption data or transcript panel. Collection may fail if captions are unavailable or YouTube changes its interface.

Checking the panel’s end does not guarantee that every spoken word is included. Check names and numbers in automatic captions before auditing.

Scripts over 60,000 characters are never silently truncated. Download the full TXT file from the extension and review it in separate sections.

Automatic caption import is currently supported only by the desktop Chrome extension. Extensions for mobile Chrome, the YouTube app and Safari are not provided.

How are captions handled?

Collecting captions uses no audit credits. Applying imported text to VIDEOudit does not automatically run an AI audit.

Only the selected video’s URL, title, captions and timestamps are transferred. The extension does not read Google passwords or login cookies.

Pending transfers stay in the extension’s temporary storage. Access expires after 30 minutes; expired data is cleaned up the next time the extension is used. Applied or discarded transfers are deleted, and storage is cleared when the browser session ends.

When you run an audit in VIDEOudit, the script and supplied video information are sent to OpenAI. The generated report is stored in your account.

Audit criteria, weights and API keys stay on the server. The extension only collects captions.
